Bulimia is an illness process that is an eating disorder which is common among young women. They are usually of normal, or nearly normal, weight that is characterized by episodic binge eating and is often followed by feelings of guilt, depression and self-condemnation.
The exact cause of bulimia isn’t known but there are a number of factors that do influence the development of the process. Research has shown that eating disorders happen more frequently in relatives of people with bulimia. The link may be genetics or family influences but the exact cause hasn’t been found. But experts do agree that cultural factors are very important and with the emphasis placed on thinness in magazines, television and even radio this can influence how women seek the approval and acceptance of others.
Bulimia self help may be possible when the person suffering from and experiencing this disorder recognizes her own problem and has caught it early in the process.
Unless a person suffering from bulimia is at risk for serious physical complications, most can be treated by doctors and psychologists on an outpatient basis. Early treatment is very important because over time this behavior becomes harder to change while causing more physical problems for the sufferer.
