Oily Skin Care

No one really has the perfect skin. While most people who are over 30 suffer from drier conditions, those who are younger often have difficulty with oily conditions. This oil is a natural moisturizer and skin conditioner that is produced by sebaceous glands located below the skin surface. The oil is released to the surface to keep the skin moist and protect it from the elements. Without sebum our faces would soon dry up and flake off – but with too much sebum we are faced with whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

The plus side of those who experience an oily complexion is that it also has some protective measures against aging. These individuals are less prone to wrinkles and lines that mark the passage of time.

Skin care for oily skin relies on patience to treat both the exterior issues and the internal production which requires a holistic approach. Results can be slow but success is something to truly celebrate. Although the oily condition may not be completely eliminated, it can be controlled and acne symptoms minimized to make the skin more attractive.

The goal of external treatment is to remove the excess surface sebum without totally removing all lipids. Any severe degreasing will defeat the aim since the skin will respond with even more secretion of sebum. Most experts recommend that once you find a cleanser that works for your oily complexion, stick with it.

Wash your face twice daily which is the easiest way to keep it clear of blemishes often caused by dirt that is attracted to an oily face. Do not wash more than twice daily because it will actually make the condition worse. If you are wearing makeup use a makeup remover before washing your face. After washing, use an astringent or toner that is designed for oily skin to help clean off the last of the dirt. Be sure it doesn’t contain alcohol because it will strip off too much from your face.

During the day you can try some of the oil blotting papers. They are designed to wick away the oil sitting on top of the skin without any harsh chemicals or through a thorough degreasing.

Whether or not you use moisturizer is something that only you can determine. If your face feels dry and tight once you are finished washing then yes, you should use a moisturizer to finish the process.

Once or twice a week you should use an exfoliant to remove the dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. Or you can alternate with a clay mask to get a deep cleaning. But do not do a clay mask more than once a week because your skin will rebound and create more oil to compensate.

Makeup is another challenge for those who suffer from oily skin. However, many cosmetic companies now offer makeup specifically designed for individuals who suffer from oily skin. Look for makeup that is advertised for those with oily skin which are oil free. Many times mineral makeup will be able to accommodate the needs of people who have an oily complexion.

There is no magical cure for oily skin. It requires regular treatment to keep it clean and blemish free. Massaging the face while washing will help to normalize the production of sebum and distribute it more evenly across the face.

Fruit acids included in homemade skin treatments have been shown to remove the oil but retain the moisture in the skin. Using cucumber juice, lime juice and yogurt can effectively keep oil under control. Making a mask with Aloe Vera, crushed strawberries and yogurt will work as an astringent. Keep it on for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

If working to keep your skin clean at home does not do the trick then talk with your dermatologist who will have some suggestions to improve your skin care regimen. Although it is a challenge, working with oily skin isn’t impossible. And remember, you’ll look younger than your peers in just a few years!
